About George O. Weber

George Oswald Weber was born in Owego, N.Y. and raised in Washington. He was a graduate of McKinley Technical High School and the University of Maryland.

Early in his career, Weber was an engineer with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey and a partner in general contracting firm. He later served as director of the physical plant at the University of Maryland from 1946 to 1972, supervising a tenfold expansion of campus facilities. At the university, one of his first major projects was construction of Byrd Stadium. During his tenure, high-rise dormitories, libraries, Cole Field House and other facilities were also built. Weber also supervised construction at the Eastern Shore campus in Princess Anne. After retiring, he developed residential and commercial projects in Maryland. He lived in College Park and Sarasota, FL.

Weber served in the Army in Italy during World War II and commanded a police battalion of the D.C. National Guard that served in Korea during the Korean War. He retired as a colonel in the Army Reserve in 1963. His military honors include a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart.

Weber was president of a chapter of the Sigma Chi social fraternity, the Maryland Classified Employees Association, and the National Association of Physical Plant Administrators. He was also chairman of the building committee of the Prince George’s County chapter of the Red Cross.

He was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts and a member of Riverdale Presbyterian Church, the Kiwanis Club of Prince George’s County, Manor Country Club, the Military Order of the World Wars, and the Terrapin M clubs at the University. His interests included golf.

About the Fund

The George O. Weber Family Endowed Veterans Scholarship was established in 2016 by Jeffrey A. Weber '76 and Robert C. Weber '74 in memory of their father. The fund provides need-based scholarship support for veteran students at the University of Maryland.
